What hidden beauty lurks beneath these faded flowers?

Actually, this is a slipcover and an even uglier floral print lurked below it.

We restored it's dignity and made it smile again with a new slipcover in navy microsuede. Behold.

Shades of Blue

Look at this sad little thing with OLD tweedy upholstery, a floppy cushion and a prolapsed undercarriage. 

I felt that we had to address the spring situation because they were literally hanging out beneath the chair. Full disclosure, I have no idea how to properly fix this problem, and I didn't take any pictures to show the damage. An upholsterer could take the whole chair apart and re-build it, but this little guy is really just going to sit in a corner and look cute and isn't worth the significant investment to repair. 

My fix? Support the springs with jute webbing stapled to the bottom of the frame. It holds my weight, keeps everything in place and looks nice and neat. 

A new outfit in navy indoor/outdoor poly with some snazzy turquoise trim and he's ready to roll...

Linen Wing Chair For Sale

For Sale: $300

I bought this chair from a friend was moving and didn't have room for it in her new home. It sat in her formal living room and was rarely ever used. The scale, condition and quality are excellent, it just needed an update on the fabric. See the last picture for the original upholstery that is still in place under the new fabric.

Polka Dotted Wing Chairs

A comfy and beloved set of wing chairs suffered from a simple case of dated upholstery. That's easy enough to fix.  Donna Katz of DK Designs chose a fun but still traditional fabric for slipcovers.

I loved the rolled arms. They are not common on wing chairs but give them a clubby feel that makes them more inviting.The cushions got a layer of dacron wrap to beef them up and make them look new. 

A Complete Original

My daughter is a graphic design major. Near the end of their final semester the department hosts an open to the public show where each senior gets a space to create a gallery of their projects and designs.

My daughter thought it would be interesting to design her own fabric and include a 3-D piece in her gallery.  She created her design and uploaded it to a company called SPOONFLOWER. Within two weeks, her original design was transformed into yards of 54" wide cotton/linen and delivered to her doorstep. 

She found an old chair and asked me to make a slipcover for it using her fabric. 

I can think of so many cool applications for this service.You can order as little as a yard and the site has tools to manipulate your image size and repeat. How fun would it be to transform a piece of a child's art into a pillow? In addition to fabric in a large assortment of weights and widths, you can also design your own wallpaper and wrapping paper. Original wrapping paper? I love this idea!

Checked Wing Chairs in Shades of Blue

These guys are partners to the darling love seat from my previous post.

It never ceases to amaze me how many iterations there can be of the humble wing chair. These are rather curvy.  

From a construction viewpoint, they were just the right amount of challenge. I really like to try to mimic the lines of the upholstery as much as possible and a medium size plaid to match increased the difficulty factor a notch. 

I know the homeowner will be so happy with these chairs. The original upholstery is also a blue plaid, but more of a Williamsburg navy and cream colorway. This is still perfectly traditional but brightened and updated just enough. We used the bias cording to trim her LOVESEAT. Once the dust settles and construction is finished I'll try to update with a shot of the whole room.

Decorating an Attic Retreat

I recently shared the story of a funky old wing chair slipcovered in royal blue with yellow trim. All by himself he was pretty loud but today he joined the rest of the pieces in the coolest teen bedroom and settled in like the perfect party guest. 

The space isn't quite complete but here's a shot of him with a fabulous applique monogram pillow.

Aren't the floors great? They just sanded down the original wood and added a light whitewash for a pickled effect. The design of this space is by Sue Fisher of Sue Can Do in Bishopville MD. 

A close up of the pillow. The letters and trim are the same yellow cotton duck as the trim on the chair. I'm crazy about Leontine Linens which inspired the design of this pillow and love the simple font.

 And here is one of three bright turquoise dormers with roman shades in a darling chevron print. Cushy window seat cushions in each one match the wall color just about perfectly. 

The mom and her designer have done a great job putting together a fabulous space. I have a few more things to sew for them, including a bedskirt and body pillow cover and will update this with pictures as they go into place.
