SLIPCOVERS

A word or two about slipcovers...

Slipcovers can be an excellent solution when you want to change the look of a piece of furniture. Fabric, and to an extent, design changes (like adding or removing a skirt) are often all that you need to make an old piece look new. Because the original upholstery stays in place, a slipcover is usually less costly than reupholstering. Structural problems like broken springs, saggy webbing or worn out foam & fill cannot be fixed with a slipcover and should be taken to an upholsterer.

Unlike upholstery, slipcovers aren't stapled or nailed to the furniture frame. The fabric is slipped over the piece and tucked in to the seat and/or back to hold it in place. Furniture that gets heavy use will need to be re-tucked periodically.

Slipcovers can be washable if you choose sturdy washable fabric and pre-launder before construction. Be sure to remove it carefully, close zippers, pre-treat stains and wash in cool water. Tumble dry on low or line dry until damp. Put the slipcover back on while it's damp and smooth out any wrinkles. A good spray with Scotchguard after washing will really help extend the time between cleanings.

Inexpensive cotton ticking looks crisp yet casual on a pair of club chairs. I had a little fun with the stripes on the pillow fronts.
